2011 Lincoln Navigator Review

The 2011 Lincoln Navigator.
Want a big, full-lux SUV and insist on buying American? Your ride is ready.

It helps to be a bit of a traditionalist, as well, since the 2011 Lincoln Navigator is year five of the Gen 3 Navigator (and 2012s changes are minimal, so its going into year six).  But familiarity can breed contentment...and the Navigator is like an old friend.

The downturn of the economy and upturn in gas prices has driven the amateurs out of the fullsize and luxury SUV market. Its back to the people who really want, need and appreciate them. And as a former pre-soccer mom era Suburban owner, I can tell you, the 2011 Navigator is a sweet ride.

As with the now-discontinued Lincoln Town Car,  Ford hasnt been peppering the press fleets with Navigators, so we borrowed one from Fiesta Lincoln in Mesa, Arizona for a week. They put us not just in a Navigator, but the extended-length Navigator L...three rows of seats and room for a bunch of cargo, luggage, groceries, you name it, in the back.

Frankly, the Navigator looks better as the Navigator L. Its a tall beast and the 14.9 inches of extra length makes it look less blocky. And it may be me, but I think it rides considerably better in L form as well.

Our tester was also a 4X4 model, so the starting price was $62,695. For that, you get a 5.4 liter, 310 horsepower V8 with a six-speed automatic transmission, power liftgate, power folding, heated memory outside mirrors, power running boards, HID headlamps, SYNC, THX audio, heated and cooled front seats, heated 2nd row seats and power fold-flat 3rd row seats.

Theres also dual-zone climate control, rear auxilary climate control, voice-activated navigation (hey, a Navigator should have nav standard), 4-wheel disc brakes with ABS, forward and reverse sensing system, rain-sensing wipers, power adjustable pedals (a great thing for families whose drivers are of different heights and leg lengths. Im 60". Mrs. TireKicker is 51".) a trailer towing package, a full complement of airbacks, Advance Trac with RSC and the Securilock anti-theft system.

Inside, its leather and wood as far as the eye can see (and the interior is so spacious "as far as the eye can see" is really an issue here).  In the Navigator, standard is loaded...and yet, this one was loaded just a bit more. From the options list came Rapid Spec 101A, the monochrome limited edition package, turning a lot of normally chrome bits the body color (White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat) and adding a power moonroof for $1,645.

That White Platinum Metallic Tri-Coat was extra cost, as well...$595.  An upgrade to 20 inch polished aluminum wheels cost $1,310, and all-weather floor mats were $75. $925 for destination and delivery brings the grand total to $66,320. Given that you can load a half-ton Chevy Suburban to $65,000 and change and cracking $70K in luxury SUVs isnt difficult, thats a very good value. Just be prepared at the pump...the EPA says the Navigator L 4X4 should get 13 miles per gallon in the city, 18 on the highway. Your mileage may vary. Ours did. In a 60/40 city street/urban freeway mix, we managed 12.6 mpg.

Still, its a nice machine with tons of presence and a lot of usefulness. Lincolns likely to either completely re-do or do away with the Navigator after 2012. If this is for you, Id act now.

How to Put on Belts in a BMW 1996 TI


1. Open the hood and locate the belt tensioner for the air conditioner belt. The tensioner is mounted to the front of the engine block between the crankshaft and the a/c compressor. Use the tensioner pulley bolt to loosen the tension from the belt.
2. Position a 3/8-inch drive breaker bar and a metric socket onto the tensioner pulley bolt. Turn the breaker bar in a counter-clockwise motion to loosen the tension from the belt. Pull the belt out from around the tensioner pulley, the a/c pulley and the crankshaft pulley. Remove the belt from the engine well.
3. Locate the serpentine belt tensioner mounted to the front of the engine block on the lower left hand side of the alternator. Use the tensioner pulley bolt to loosen the tension from the belt.
4. Position a 3/8-inch drive breaker bar and a metric socket onto the tensioner pulley bolt. Turn the breaker bar in a counter-clockwise motion to loosen the tension from the belt. Pull the belt off the tensioner pulley and the remaining accessory pulleys. Remove the belt from the engine compartment.
5. Route the new serpentine belt around the accessories exactly as described by the belt routing diagram that is stamped to the top of the fan shroud. Once the belt is inside the accessory pulleys, turn the tensioner counterclockwise with the breaker bar and socket again and slide the belt around the tensioner pulley. Release the breaker bar and remove it from the tensioner.
6. Route the new air conditioner belt around the a/c compressor pulley and the crankshaft pulley. Turn the tensioner counterclockwise with the breaker bar and socket again. Slide the belt around the tensioner pulley and release the breaker bar. Remove the breaker bar from the engine compartment. Look over both belts to ensure they are seated inside of each accessory pulley.
7. Crank the engine for 10 to 15 seconds to completely seat the new belts inside the accessory pulleys. Turn the engine off.

How to Remove the Wheel Bearings on a 1982 Mercedes Benz 240D


1. Park the car on a flat and level surface. Ensure the back wheels are chocked. Loosen the lug nuts on the two front wheels. Do not remove the lugs until the car is lifted.
2. Place a jack under the front cross member of the car and raise it high enough to place jack stands under the cross member. Lower the car onto the jack stands.
3. Unscrew the lug nuts on the driver side of the car. Pull the wheel off the axle. Place it to the side.
4. Unbolt the caliper by unscrewing the bolts in the back with a socket wrench. Pull the caliper off and place it in the shock tower. Do not let the caliper hang by the brake line as this will damage the brake line.
5. Pry the dust cover in the middle of the assembly with a flat-tip screwdriver. This will expose the spindle nut.
6. Pull the cotter pin out of the spindle nut with a pair of pliers. Unscrew the nut with the pliers. Place the nut and the cotter pin in the dust cover for safe keeping.
7. Pull the outer bearing out by hand. The race should come out with the bearing.
8. Pull the rotor off the spindle. The rotor may not come out smoothly. Tap the rotor with a hammer to free any rust or sediment holding the rotor in place.
9. Tap the inner bearing with a hammer to loosen the bearing. Slide the bearing off by hand.
10. Repeat steps to remove the bearings on the passenger side.

Maserati has releases a new sport package for the GranTurismo S Automatic in the United Kingdom.

The Maserati GranTurismo S Automatic Sport Pack is equipped with an automatic developing dual-cast brake discs with a standard 4.7-liter V8, 440 hp at 7,000 revolutions per minute. The maximum torque is 490 Nm at 4,750 rpm and accelerates from 0 to 100 kph (0-62 mph) in 5 seconds. Top speed is rated at 183 mph. As the name implies, the improved model has a ZF 6-speed automatic transmission that improves both engine performance and fuel economy.

The package also offers an improved styling using body colored side skirts and front winglets, black mesh side grilles, smoked out headlights, an integrated rear boot lid spoiler and oval exhaust pipes. Land Rover Range

While the Land Rover Range_e development vehicle being displayed at the 2011 Geneva auto show isnt quite ready for prime time, the vehicle is serving a vital role as a test bed for a potential future Land Rover plug-in hybrid powertrain. The test vehicle -- based off a Range Rover Sport -- is fitted with Land Rover latest 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 and an electric motor, which is hooked up with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission. Precise specifications are still under wraps, but the company does say the Range_e has an EV-only range of 20 miles. 

When combined with the diesel engine, the vehicle can travel an impressive 691 miles before replenishing both the fuel tank and battery pack. The Range_e heading to Geneva is one of several working prototypes used by the company for PHEV development. Land Rover hasn officially confirmed a version for production, but we wouldnt be surprised if a similar system eventually works its way into future Land Rover and Range Rover models.

The good news for Toyota is that the Prius itself is better than ever. Last year, Toyota engineers reduced the cars aerodynamic drag, and the overall look is now sleeker and sportier. Under the hood, a larger gas engine and stronger electric motor combine for more power and better fuel economy -- the Prius has a combined EPA fuel economy estimate of 50 mpg, the best of any conventional hybrid vehicle. The newest Prius also has revised suspension tuning and improved electric steering to help make it more agile than before.
The 2011 Prius can also seemingly transform from a versatile utility hatchback to a small, hyper-efficient luxury sedan depending on how you equip it. On the higher trim levels, youll find high-end appointments like heated leather seats, a solar-powered sunroof (it ventilates the interior when parked), a navigation system, adaptive cruise control (it matches your speed to the car ahead), a pre-collision system (tightens seatbelts and applies the brakes if a crash is unavoidable) and a lane-departure warning system. Theres even an automated parallel-parking system to help you squeeze into tight downtown parking spaces.
There are some downsides to this latest Prius, however. Most concern the interior, such as too many cheap-feeling plastics, an awkward driving position and the lack of an iPod adapter on most models. Its less expensive and drives a bit more like a regular car, but its not as fuel-efficient, it has a smaller backseat and it can seem too noisy and budget-oriented.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options

The 2011 Toyota Prius is available in five trim levels: Prius I, Prius II, Prius III, Prius IV and Prius V. The Advanced Technology package available for Prius V includes all components of the Navigation package plus adaptive cruise control, pre-collision alert system, a lane departure warning system and automated self-parking.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2011 Toyota Prius is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine combined with a pair of electric motor/generators; they send their power through a specialized continuously variable transmission (CVT). The result is total output of 134 horsepower.
In track testing, we clocked the Prius from zero to 60 mph in 10.1 seconds, which is about average for a hybrid vehicle. The most important number, however, is fuel economy. The EPA estimates the 2011 Prius will return a very impressive 51 mpg city/48 highway and 50 mpg combined.

Safety

Every 2011 Toyota Prius comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver knee airbag. Optional equipment includes a pre-collision warning system and a lane-departure warning system. In brake testing, the Prius stopped from 60 mph in a short 118 feet.
The Prius has not yet been rated using the governments new, more strenuous 2011 crash tests. According to 2010 ratings (which arent comparable to 2011 ratings) the Toyota Prius earned four stars rating in frontal impact protection for both driver and passenger. In side impact testing, the Prius scored five stars for front passengers and four stars for the rear. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Prius the highest rating of "Good" in frontal offset and side-impact crashes.

Interior Design and Special Features

The 2011 Prius features straightforward climate and audio controls that jut out toward the driver in a "floating console" that provides a storage tray underneath. Its a nice design that helps maximize cabin space. The digital instrument panel also features a floating layer that displays audio, temperature and trip computer information when the driver touches those controls on the steering wheel, minimizing eye movement. Some drivers might find the overall design a bit too busy-looking, however.
Materials quality in the Prius is disappointing, with harder and cheaper plastics than other cars in its price range. The corduroy-like texturing on the climate and audio controls seems nice at first, but collects oil from the skin and causes circular dark spots on most buttons.
In terms of versatility, though, the Prius is still a champ. The hatchback body style provides more cargo capacity than a typical midsize sedan, and the backseat offers plenty of space. Sadly, taller drivers still have to contend with a steering wheel thats placed too far away. Theres a telescoping column, but it doesnt come out nearly far enough.

Driving Impressions

The 2011 Toyota Prius features a hyper-quiet cabin, made possible by its part-time electric motivation and extensive use of sound-deadening materials. The ride is also quite comfortable. The electric steering doesnt provide much in the way of feel, but its user-friendly in parking lots and doesnt become overly boosted on the highway.
Acceleration is far from sprightly, but its on par for a hybrid and certainly adequate for most drivers. Four driving modes -- Normal, Eco, Power and EV -- allow the pilot to decide the optimum powertrain configuration depending on conditions. Eco is measured and sluggish, but returns the best fuel economy. Power is useful for entering freeways or driving on hills. EV mode locks out the gasoline engine, but only up to 25 mph with at least a half-charged battery pack.

Frankfurt debuts Rimac Concept One【Video】


Rimac Automobili has officially unveiled the Concept_One, which will debut at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

This electric supercar weighs in at 3,637 lbs and produces 1,088-hp. That allows the Rimac Concept_One to go from 0 to 62 mph in 2.8 seconds with a top speed of 190 mph. On a full charge, the Concept_One is capable of driving up to 373 mph.

Each wheel can accelerate or decelerate independently hundreds of times per second. Sophisticated ECUs control each of the power system, using the input of precise sensors placed all over the car.

To create a luxurious interior, Rimac enlisted Vilner and a group of former Pininfarina employees. The end result is pretty impressive as the cabin is elegantly appointed with premium leather, carbon fiber trim, a digital instrument cluster and an advanced infotainment system.

The Concept_One world debut at Frankfurt Motor Show


FRANKFURT, September 13th, 2011. - Rimac Automobili is unveiling the worlds first electric supercar - the Concept_One.

The Concept_One is an exceptional supercar with a new propulsion concept. With a curb weight of 1650 kg, and 1088 HP, the Concept_One can reach 100 km/h from a standstill in 2.8 seconds and continue to accelerate to the limit of 305 km/h. 92kWh of energy in the Battery Modules delivers enough juice"for up to 600 km of range.

Rimac Automobili developed a unique powertrain which is divided into four sub-systems, each consisting of one motor, inverter and reduction gearbox. Each of those systems drives one wheel, working completely independent one from the other. Its called All Wheel Torque Vectoring and it allows a new approach to vehicle dynamics. Mate Rimac, the CEO of Rimac Automobili says: "I believe that the electric motor is a much better machine compared to the ICE, in almost all aspects, especially for a sports car."
The carbon-fibre body is designed by Adriano Mudri: „Exploring the labyrinth of creativity, it was obvious at an early stage that the design had to be simple and clear with a lot of sporty elegance to easily catch up with its competitors in this power & exclusivity class."

The interior is designed by a team of former Pininfarina employees, led by Mr. Goran Popovi?. After the Rimac Automobili engineering team finished the development and prototyping of the interior parts, the leather-specialist Vilner stepped-in. The result is a high-tech-supercar interior which can be both appealing and pleasant to interact with, at the same time. Special attention has been paid to the infotainment system and gadgets like head-up-displays and soft-close doors which had to match the propulsion technology in its advancement.

Rimac Automobili is a young company which develops and produces high performance electric vehicles, drive trains and battery system. This all began when the founder of Rimac Automobili, Mate Rimac, converted his old BMW to a race EV. He explored the technology by improving every part and began to team-up with experts from different fields in order to develop the next generation supercar. The old BMW is now officially homologated as a "Rimac Automobili e-M3"and is used as a test mule for battery technologies, battery management, propulsion systems and latest in-house developments. Describing their beginnings Mate Rimac points out: "Our first car evolved in a short period of time into a project that didnt give a final result - instead it was a start, the start of the worlds first electric hyper car - the Concept _One". A group of 20 multi-talented engineers and designers settled in Croatia near Zagreb and are making something new and revolutionary. Installation Instructions for a BMW M5 Emblem

6. Take the new M5 emblem and push it down directly on the spot where the original emblem was. Be sure to apply pressure with both hands to make sure the emblem is secure.
